Last week, the iconic chapel at Assumption Cemetery was taken down by an excavator.
The cemetery is located at 2401 Court St. in Syracuse. Assumption Cemetery is one of the largest cemeteries in Syracuse.
As Assumption Church in the North Side of Syracuse once had a major German Catholic congregation, many Germans were buried at Assumption Cemetery.
A call placed to the cemetery’s offices about why the chapel was taken down has not yet been returned.
