The Gifford Foundation has awarded Central Current a grant to support its digital newsroom.

Central Current was awarded $15,000, set aside for tools to run the website centralcurrent.org, as well as manage digital revenue.

Specifically, the funds will be used to support the cost of Central Current’s content management system, newsletter distribution, and website analytics.

Central Current uses Newspack, a platform built on Wordpress.com, to operate the website. Newspack is designed for small and medium publishers, and its subscription includes technical support and access to a community of similar publishers.

The newsroom also uses MailChimp and Parse.ly for outreach and content analytics, which the grant will help support.

The Gifford Foundation was established in 1954 as a private philanthropic foundation serving Syracuse and the surrounding Central New York region. The Foundation supports individuals and organizations through grants and initiatives that build on community assets and promote positive change in the community.

Central Current is community-funded and relies on philanthropy, in the form of small donations, foundation support and major donors.

It is the only nonprofit, independent digital news organization serving the people who live and work in Syracuse and Central New York and care about its future.
