Progressive Jo Bennett declared victory in the race for Onondaga County Legislature’s 15th District against Republican Woodruff Carroll late Tuesday night.

Bennett won 79.4% of the vote with 56.7% of the votes counted, according to Onondaga County Board of Elections unofficial results. Carroll had 16.1%.

A third candidate, Bill Kinne, who lost the Democratic primary to Bennett in June, ran a write-in campaign for the seat. Write-in candidates received 4.5% of the vote.

The district includes a V-shaped swath of the southern part of Syracuse.

The seat was left open by Maurice “Mo” Brown, who ran for State Assembly this year. Both Brown and Bennett are Democratic Socialists, and the two have campaigned together since the primaries.

Bennett’s priorities include providing safe, affordable housing; universal childcare; and fast, free buses to county residents, according to their website. They support Good Cause eviction protections and believe in expanding rent stabilization policies.

Bennett ran on the Democratic and Working Families Party lines. Carroll ran on the Republican and Conservative Party lines.
