State Senator Christopher Ryan declared himself Tuesday night the winner of his re-election bid in the 50th Senate District, saying he beat Republican challenger James Corl.

Ryan called the race at the Onondaga County Democratic Committee’s watch party in downtown Syracuse at about 10:30 p.m.

A Democrat from Geddes, Ryan had 63.7% of the vote with 72% of the votes counted, according to New York State Board of Elections unofficial results. Corl had 41.9% of the vote.

Ryan first won office in the State Senate in 2024, when he narrowly defeated Republican Nick Paro in a race to replace Democrat John Mannion, who ran for congressional office. Ryan previously served in the Onondaga County Legislature for over a decade and served six years on the Geddes Town Council.

Corl, a 24-year-old political upstart from Cicero, has no previous experience in elected office, but has worked in the State Senate as a legislative director for Senator Mark Walczyk [R-49]. Corl had campaigned on an affordability agenda which he said would reduce costs of gas, cut waste in the state budget, and make houses more affordable for prospective first-time homeowners.

Ryan, who refused to debate Corl, received hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from a political action committee representing gambling sites.

The State Senate’s 50th District includes the cities of Fulton and Oswego, as well as the towns of Cicero, Clay, DeWitt, Geddes, Manlius, and Salina.
