Central Current is excited to hire our very first full-time operations staff member, who will become one of the founding members of our nonprofit in Syracuse and Central New York.

We are seeking a courageous, dedicated public servant with experience in operations, development, or sales to join our team. This staff member will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help launch the business side of our digital publication, with support from our editor-in-chief, an established journalist and manager.

The position is based at the broadcast headquarters of WCNY, which has provided us space to start our newsroom, and invited us to collaborate on several initiatives.

We are assembling a staff that believes in the power of storytelling and watchdog journalism to inspire change and transform communities. We aim to tell the complicated, nuanced history of Syracuse and Central New York and cover how that history shapes the strengths and challenges of the region today.

This position will focus on operations and business, including finance, marketing, fundraising, donor and board relations, and will also help to develop our other revenue streams. It includes lots of opportunity for growth as our organization develops revenue streams and grows.

Operations Duties and Responsibilities

  • Finance: Manage bank accounts, cashflow, ledger of debits and credits
  • Help set monthly board meetings and manage communicate with board members
  • Report to and assist editor-in-chief with human resources, strategic planning, payroll
  • Manage donor processing, revenue and budgeting
  • Pay monthly and annual bills
  • Work with WCNY on logistics, reserving space, plan for cafe space

Fundraising and Revenue Duties & Responsibilities

  • Foundations and grant management
    • Manage LOIs, applications
    • Schedule meetings, manage relationships, field questions
    • Research opportunities
  • Major donors
    • Process donation, send acknowledgment letters
    • Develop and manage relationships
  • Marketing
    • Research and engage with audience
    • Cultivate and interact with audience
    • Plan and run events
    • Help maintain social media presence and growth
  • Develop Membership and Scholarship Revenue Streams
    • Manage membership campaigns, drives to increase small donors
    • Establish and manage member benefits
    • Publish and curate membership newsletter
    • Pitch and develop sponsorship partners
    • Manage and design creative for sponsorships
    • Cultivate and maintain relationships with potential partners
    • Work with and/or manage contracts for consultants, part-time

Qualifications

  • At least 2-3 years of operations, development/fundraising or sales experience (track record of relationship – donor/client – management)
  • Strong digital, copy editing and grant writing and research skills
  • Experience in community engagement, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and/or online media/publishing/journalism
  • Experience in office management, finance, technology
  • Excellent work ethic; organizational, communication and teamwork skills
  • Understanding and respect for journalistic principles and independence
  • Love for storytelling (experience with public relations, marketing or related field preferred)
  • Belief in journalism’s importance to democracy
  • Knowledge of Central New York a bonus; interest in the community a must
  • Start-up mindset (experience at a small business, nonprofit or startup preferred)
  • Some website, SEO and social media experience
  • Not afraid to pick up the phone
  • Self-driven, motivated, ambitious

  • Budget: $45,000 salary plus benefits
  • Hiring timeline: ASAP
  • Staffing/hours: Full-time, 40 hours a week
