On Saturday night, the Syracuse Press Club announced the recipients of its industry awards at a dinner held at the Collegian Hotel & Suites on Genesee St. All sectors of local news media were represented, with categories for broadcast, print, and digital reporting included along with professional recognition awards for individual achievements.
This year’s ceremony marked Central Current’s third appearance at the Syracuse Press Club awards. The nonprofit newsroom earned five awards, including:
- 1st place for Print/Digital News — Investigative Story or Series: in recognition of the Driving Force Series, a collaboration with USA TODAY Network-New York, Syracuse University, Central Current that examined police car crashes in New York State.
- 1st place for Print/Digital News — Headline Writing: in recognition of the article, “Oswego wanted to be ‘ahead of the curve’ on public homelessness. So the city criminalized it.” by Eddie Velazquez.
- Newcomer of the Year award: this professional recognition award honors high achievement by a young reporter beginning their career and was awarded to Central Current’s Government & Politics Reporter Patrick McCarthy. Learn more.
- 2nd place for Digital Journalism — Multimedia Story: in recognition of the article, “Asha Laaya ‘Farm of Hope’ added 14 acres to its farm. Now it needs staff to expand its reach.” by Yolanda Stewart with photography by Michelle Gabel.
- Honorable Mention for Print/Digital News — Human Interest Feature or Series: in recognition of the article, “Syracuse’s South Side says goodbye to community staple Timbuk Tu African Imports after 30 years.” by Yolanda Stewart.
In total, Central Current has earned 16 Syracuse Press Club awards since it began publishing in June of 2022.
